Keith M’s Corvette

My love for cars in general started many years ago with my Dad. However, I remember vividly the day I became a Corvette enthusiast. I live near the old St. Louis Corvette plant. My wife’s cousin was an instructor at the Air Force Academy. Her cousin purchased a brand new 1974 Corvette in Medium Blue from the Chevrolet dealership across the street from the St. Louis Corvette plant. It was gorgeous… He had asked his father to pick it up for him from the dealer when it was ready and then take it home in Collinsville, IL until he could come get it and then drive it back to Colorado Springs, Co.

I worked at my wife’s family owned grocery store at the time where I met her cousin when he came into town to take his new Corvette back to Colorado. He was about 12 years older than me but we immediately hit it off and started talking cars and I just thought he was the coolest guy. He said he had a friend that lived in Cape Girardeau, Mo about 130 miles southeast of St. Louis . He was going to have lunch and just catch up with his friend. He asked if I wanted to go with him in the Corvette. I was like, wait, what, you’re asking me to go with you on a road trip in your brand new beautiful Corvette?  Oh hell yeah! I jumped at the opportunity to get to hang out with him and just tag along. I arrived at his house early on a Saturday morning. The car was pulled out of the garage ready to go. I remember the car sitting there in the rear driveway and thinking it was the nicest looking car I ever did see. As I walked up, he threw me the keys to his brand new Corvette and said let’s go. I was like no way, I can’t drive your brand new Corvette! He insisted and his mine was made up. It was like I was in a dream. That was that. I started the Corvette and we headed out. The entire drive I kept asking him if he wanted to drive and he would just say no, not yet. When we got to Cape Girardeau, he had to go to a phone booth (no cell phones yet) to call his friend. He came back to the car and said his friend didn’t answer. He was like, oh well, let’s get lunch. After lunch he wanted me to dive again. This time we headed due west and drove another two hours out of the way. Needless to say, he never drove the car, at all, all day. We got back to where we started 10 hours later and he never once drove the car. It was the best day of my life! Many years later, I got thinking, maybe he never really had a friend in Cape Girardeau but just used that as an excuse to let me enjoy his car and just spend time together. I know, Mr. Obvious… Looking back, I know we both enjoyed the day driving all day in that shiny beautiful medium blue Corvette. He definitely passed the love of Corvette’s on to me. I’m 66 years old now and it seems like it was just yesterday. How time flies.

I love Saturday’s…  ?
