A collector recently fell victim to a Facebook Marketplace scam while trying to purchase a 1963 Corvette. Believing he had found the deal of a lifetime, he wired $26,000 to a seller who promised the car was ready to ship. Once the money was sent, the seller disappeared—leaving the buyer without a car and without recourse.
This type of scam is becoming increasingly common in the classic car world.
Here are some red flags to watch for when buying online:
Unrealistic pricing

Wire transfer requests
Lack of documentation

I’ve had at least one Corvette in my garage for the past 40 years.
I was first smitten while in high school in a small S.E. Oklahoma town when the ’63 Split Window Coupe made its debut. For years, I never saw one in person, but just seeing a photo filled me with resolve. My teenage hope at the time said, ‘Some day…’
It took 22 years for that day to happen, but it did with the discovery of a ’63 coupe in the ‘want ads’ of the Dallas Morning News. A banker who believed in me loaned me the money to buy it. For 38 years, it was my constant companion. During those latter years, the ’63 was joined by more than a dozen additional Corvettes.
Then life intervened. I liquidated the entire collection, along with hundreds of neon signs I had assembled.
I immediately had seller’s regret on the ’63. I finally found a worthy replacement, an original factory black/black split window. Its sole companion now is a black/black C8 ZO6. I’m done. I’m out of space. I’m completely satisfied.
And I’m still a Corvette guy. That’s never going to change.

If you were in the market for something a bit out of the ordinary, you could pick RPO L68 on your order form. This got you the Tri-Power 427ci/400hp big block. Add to that, automatic transmission, power brakes, power steering, power windows, telescoping steering column, tinted glass, speed warning indicator, headrest seats, shoulder harnesses, and am/fm radio. Oh, and don’t forget the air conditioning! On the outside, add a side exhaust system, and aluminum bolt on wheels wrapped in red line bias ply rubber, and you got yourself a fully loaded Corvette cruiser! Or should we say a bruiser?
The beautifully frame-off restored example presented here is one of the most unique, highest option ’67’s you’ll ever have the pleasure of knowing! Not only is it loaded with options, but it’s also loaded with documentation and awards, including N.C.R.S. Top Flight, and Bloomington Gold!
