CHP can’t confirm link to fatal hit-and-run

California Highway Patrol investigators have identified a vehicle found burning east of Santa Maria on Monday as a Chevrolet Corvette.

Whether or not it is the same car involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning is still in question, according to Officer Rob Wallace.

“It’s positively identified as a Corvette. Whether it’s connected or not is still a possibility,” Wallace said Friday morning.

Local law enforcement is on the lookout for a blue 2005 or 2006 Corvette they believe struck and killed Fabian Alexander, 46, a transient from Modesto, early Sunday morning as he was walking on the northbound off-ramp where Highway 101 intersects with Highway 166.

Based on debris left at the scene and witnesses in the area at the time of the accident, authorities began looking for the blue Corvette.

On Monday, Santa Maria police, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and CHP officers responded to a report of a vehicle fire in a field near the intersection of Foxen Canyon Road and Mesa Road. The vehicle was burned so badly, Wallace said identifying the car has been difficult.

“We’re looking for a blue Corvette, but it was burned so badly we can’t tell what color it was,” Wallace said. “We’re still getting phone calls and leads and we’d like that to continue.”

Anyone with information about the accident or the vehicle fire can call the CHP Santa Maria office at 349-8728.
