The ’70’s were turbulent times indeed for the auto industry. Especially the “Big Three”. The Federal Government was getting involved big time, as were insurance companies to make cars safer (good) and slower (bad). The beginning of the decade saw the peak of the horsepower wars! But, towards the end, the fun was disappearing at a swift rate and the party was basically over . . . for a while, at least. So, the ’70’s came in like a Lion, but went out like the proverbial Lamb. Unfortunately, a byproduct of all this was the death of the American Convertible. Most were gone after the ’75 model year, but there was one exception . . . The Cadillac Eldorado. The Eldo Convert continued on until ’76. Knowing the end was near, some Eldorado’s were purchased and then stored away in garages or private collections for decades. Which leads us to this one . . .
I think we can say with a fair amount of certainty that the Eldorado presented here is the lowest mile ’76 Convertible in existence! Purchased new at Powell-Olds Cadillac Inc. in Gastonia, NC. this ragtop has been extremely well preserved over the decades and presents as almost new. As well it should with only 68 original miles showing on the odometer! The paint shines brilliantly, the leather is still supple and when you start her up, you still have to strain to hear that quiet and smooth Cadillac idle from the mammoth V-8. The options include:
